"You're so mean!" "That sucks!" "You are so pointless!" People fight every day. It doesn't have to be with combat. It doesn't need to involve weapons. We all already have a weapon, built into our bodies. Our words.
Words have power. God used them to create the entire universe. Then he gave us the ability to use them. I mean, if you think about it, we are the only beings in creation that can use the same tool God used when he was creating our world. That's pretty neat, right? But a lot of the time, we can get carried away and use our words wrongly. What we say cannot easily be taken back. That is why we need to be careful.
The thing is, though, there are times when we need to use our words to stand up for ourselves. If someone is insulting our faith, we need to be able to stand up for what we believe in. But how do we know what to say? If we pray, God can help. He can communicate through us, use us to help bring more people back to him. Our words can make people feel happy, or we can ruin their day with a simple comment. That is why we need God's guidance in our words. If we allow him to speak through us, we'll bring joy to everyone around.
Of course, I don't mean to ask God before every word you say. That might take a while (for those of you who are thinking about following this literally- I'm on to you!). Each morning, pray and ask God to help you bring joy all day. Think about what compliments you can give to people. Sometimes, just a smile can brighten up a long day. We need to be able to use our words for the glory of God, so we can be lights in a darkened world. Allowing him to speak through us will make us stand out among others, and help people find their way back to Christ.
