"Why, God?" We've all thought or said those words at least once. A relative's death, the loss of a soccer game, a friend who lies behind your back. It is almost natural to blame God. After all, he created the universe, brought back the dead, and rose from death. He conquered the grave, dominated entire cities, and parted the waters. He has complete control. But he is also a patient God.
God could have made us perfect. He could have made us Christian from the moment we were born. He could have fixed the world with a single word. But he didn't. Why? Because he loves us. God gave us our own free will, our ability to make decisions and feel things that we wanted to feel. He always hoped that we would make the right choices, that we would follow him and let him lead us. But he never forced us to follow him. He never forced us to fall on our knees and worship. No matter how much we broke his heart, he let us be free. God let us be free because he loves us.
That is the same reason why he lets bad things happen to us. Because we are Christian, we have his spiritual protection and eternal life with him when we die. We all know that. It's one of the first things we learn as Christians. But some people just assume that we are now invincible, that we can't be hurt and will never lose. But that's just not true. God allows things to happen to us for reasons only he knows. Sometimes it's to keep us safe, like getting sick so we miss a party. Maybe the people at that party will get too rowdy and people will get hurt. Sometimes it's to shape our character, or sometimes allowing something to happen to us so we know not to do is again.
Even though we can't tell what God's bigger plan is, we need to trust that it's there and he knows how it will end. The war is already won. God has his own agenda for your growth. All you need to do is believe in it and let God take over your life.
